The experience

A shared result shaped by salvaging materials and turning them into a team solution

Junkyard Project is an innovative Team Building Activity that improves the effectiveness of a team and individual innovation skills. Working in teams, it’s a race against time to salvage what you need from our junk pile and then design and engineer an object to satisfy a variety of design specifications.

Teams work together, plan, strategize, and execute their ideas to create an object. The challenge is that they may only use the miscellaneous "junk" available to them. The parts are random, and not every team is given the same stuff.

What the team can practise

Clarify ownership

For Junkyard Project, agree who will plan, assemble and check each part before the work splits into separate tasks.

Share resources

During salvaging materials and turning them into a team solution, make material needs visible early so one team's progress does not block another's.

Design to a brief

Compare ideas against the agreed purpose and constraints before committing time to a single design.

Test and adapt

Try a small section first, notice what the test reveals, and revise before the group commits to the full result.

Connect contributions

Bring each person's component into the shared outcome and check that the pieces work together.

Review the build

Debrief which decision helped Junkyard Project move forward and which assumption the team had to revisit.

The session

How the Junkyard Project team experience unfolds

The session centres on salvaging materials and turning them into a team solution. The facilitator briefs the group, guides the activity and helps participants reflect on the choices they made together.

Explore the available materials

Review the project brief and the salvaged items the group can use.

Design around what exists

Compare ideas against the actual materials and their possible functions.

Build the proposed solution

Combine components and revise the design as practical constraints emerge.

Demonstrate the result

Explain how the team turned available resources into a response to the brief.

Beyond the activity

What teams can take from the Junkyard Project session

As colleagues work on salvaging materials and turning them into a team solution, they make their planning, resource choices and handoffs visible. Those moments give the facilitator a concrete way to discuss how a team turns individual contributions into something dependable.

Connect the activity to a real work project: agree what quality looks like, surface dependencies early and review a first version before the deadline makes change difficult.

Make roles and handoffs clearTest an idea before scaling itJoin individual work into one result
